Big changes are coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Creative director, Brendan Greene, shared its 2018 roadmap today announcing the PUBG tropical island new map, more new content plus stabilization. PUBG left early access last year in December 2017. Since then, the server has been constantly experiencing stability issues. There’s also discontent amongst players due to the lack of new content. This is, of course, in comparison to a big competitor – Fortnite Battle Royale.
Subsequently, Fortnite Battle Royale has then gone on to dethrone PUBG’s concurrent user count. It became the most played game overall and the most watched game on Twitch. With these changes, PUBG might once again be in the same league to compete with Greene promising major updates set for every two months.
PUBG Tropical Island New Map
The new map will be a jungle themed map despite many players wanting a snow themed map. Instead of being an 8x8km map like Erangel and Miramar, the tropical island will be a 4x4km map. According to Greene, the reason for reducing the size of the new map is to encourage a faster-paced experience. Players will be able to try out this new map in April on the Experimental Test Server.
If the smaller map isn’t your cup your tea, rest assured that there’s another 8x8km map in the works as well. Greene, however, did not divulge any information about this map. Players who have been hoping for a snow map – this might be it!
Other New Content And Features
Based on the roadmap, PUBG also intends to bring in an all-new emote system. They’ll first be testing out the emote wheel first on the test server. They plan to offer players new emotes throughout the year. This will most likely be done via microtransactions. The game design team is also planning new and interesting game modes for PUBG. No specific details yet but it’s probably something along the line of what Fortnite is doing now with their Limited Time Modes.
As always, new weapons and vehicles are also part of the future updates. New vehicles are to be added in the first half of the year with expansion to weapon set and attachments throughout the year. Other planned features include achievements, in-game friend list, squad voice chat and detailed character customization. Also, they want to introduce parachute and weapon skins to the in-game store.
General Improvements To The Game
Despite all the contents they want to bring to the game, I for one, am more concerned about stabilization and optimization. Greene promises that they had not forgotten their core responsibility to players – “to provide a stable, smooth and secure environment for enjoying a great Battle Royale experience”. Other improvements are in the department of animation, sound, and eSports. To read in detail about those, check out the full roadmap here.
