Epic Games brings down the hammer on cheaters!
At least once in your gaming lifetime, you will have come across someone who is unnaturally good at a game. Whether it be aimbots or wall hacking, cheaters find all sorts of ways to appease their need to be superior at the cost of everyone else’s fun. Epic Games recently released a Battle Royale mode in their third-person shooter zombie survival game, Fortnite. The two Fortnite Battle Royale cheaters sued by Epic Games are in serious legal trouble.
Epic Games released a statement just last week on October 5 expressing their intolerance for cheaters in their game. They wrote:
“To start, addressing cheaters in Fortnite is the highest priority across Epic Games. We are constantly working against both the cheaters themselves and the cheat providers. And it’s ongoing, we’re exploring every measure to ensure these cheaters are removed and stay removed from Fortnite Battle Royale and the Epic ecosystem.”
And sure, the community has read it. Hundreds of companies have voiced their distaste for cheaters and they have an active banning system. Epic Games shows us just how far they’re willing to go to keep their ecosystem healthy by sueing the cheaters.
Who are they?
Both players frequent a website called AddictedCheats.net that provides cheats. They mostly cater to shooter games such as Battlefield 1, KillingFloor and Call of Duty. Vraspir has already been banned nine times on separate accounts but it did not dissuade him. He keeps coming back to a different account to continue wreaking havoc. Now, Broom has only been banned once but he publicly stated that he wanted to make a cheat of his own to create “unwanted chaos and disorder”, specifically in Fortnite’s Battle Royale. This is quite literally terrorism in game.
Because of all the attention they’ve drawn to themselves, they ultimately painted flashing red targets on their backs for Epic Games. Now, they both face up to $150,000 in statutory damages. Although taking out 2 cheaters may not seem like much when they are literally an army of them hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, however, the action serves its purpose of warding off other potential cheaters because it has actual consequences to their real lives.
Cheating may seem like a fun meme but it is a serious legal offense and a direct violation of the game’s terms of service and EULA. There are other ways you can have fun in the game which doesn’t come at the cost of everyone else. I’m sure most of you out there don’t like cheaters and you can help simply by reporting any cheaters you spot. (People who are better than you at the game are not necessarily cheaters). Happy gaming! And don’t cheat.
