Recent raids in San Diego, California, and Saginaw, Michigan, have uncovered illegal gambling operations, resulting in the seizure of gambling machines, cash, and suspected drugs. A search of a San Diego residence on Thursday revealed approximately two dozen gambling machines and $4,700 in cash. Police also seized suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia. According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), nine individuals were found gambling inside the operation during the raid. One person was charged with possession of a controlled substance, and another with visiting a prohibited gambling den.
Eight suspects received warnings not to engage in illegal gambling. SDPD Lt. Jason Scott stated that these individuals could face charges if they return to any illicit gambling operations in the future.
The investigation began after SDPD officers received a tip about suspicious activity in an apartment located above a business in the Kensington neighborhood. Following their investigation, officers presented evidence to a local court, obtaining a warrant to search the property.
Authorities emphasize the importance of curbing illegal gambling due to its potential to lead to other criminal activities. “Illegal gambling dens often attract other criminal activity to the area including narcotics, prostitution, gang-related activity, noise and fighting, and people coming and going at all hours,” Scott was quoted by City News Service.

Michigan Bar Raid
In a separate incident, six slot machine-style devices and $5,161 were seized from the Red Horse Bar in Saginaw, Michigan. Authorities also confiscated $2,820 in gift cards during the raid, which took place on June 5. This action followed an investigation initiated by a tip from a private citizen about suspicious activities at the bar.
Despite receiving a cease-and-desist letter from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), the bar’s owners allegedly continued their illegal activities. The MGCB was assisted by the Michigan State Police and the Attorney General’s office in the investigation.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring compliance with all state gambling regulations,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in a statement. “We will continue to work diligently to identify and eliminate any illegal gambling activities that pose a threat to the integrity of the industry and the welfare of the public.”
