Discord is like a pleasant surprise that came out of nowhere and just sort of took over the world in a blink of an eye. Their presence in the scene of game communication is undeniable. Beating out competitors like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo and Mumble, Discord, having just announced the Discord game store, is poised to compete with other online game stores such as GOG and even Steam itself.
As for the Discord game store, in particular, the price of the subscription will stay the same as it is now for Nitro users. Basically, $4.99 per month or $49.99 for a whole year.
What is the Discord game store?
Essentially, Discord aims to curate a subscription-based game service while presenting the stage to exclusive indie games plus operate their own game store. In their words, its kinda like Netflix. The curated game service will revolve around the existing Discord Nitro subscription. Though, everyone will have access to the game store.
As of today, Discord has already rolled out the beta for Discord game store to 50,000 lucky Canadian users. Existing Nitro user will get to enjoy the list of curated games. Rolling out together with the betas, these are the games readily available if you’re a Nitro subscriber in the beta.
- Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
- De Blob
- Kathy Rain
- Kingdom: New Land
- Metro: Last Light Redux
- Saints Row: The Third
- Super Meat Boy
- System Shock Enhanced Edition
- Tormentor X Punisher
Do note that what’s in the store will be different from what Nitro users get to enjoy for free once the patch rolls out for everyone.
A wholesome experience
For Discord, the user experience is still their priority especially in the department of the existing services. They will continue to improve the voice calls and other key functions while adding new features to the Discord game store.
With that in mind, the company has stated that the new addition will allow users to let Discord scan games on their computer. This will then allow Discord to act as a unified launcher for all games you own while making it easier to get together to play with friends.
Besides that, the voice communication company has voiced their intention of aiding indie game launches. This will be done via hosting a selection of “First on Discord” titles. Games that are selected will be temporarily exclusive to Discord only for around 90 days before the developer can begin sales elsewhere. This feature will not be featured in the beta however but users can look forward to it in the future.
